We are planning a trip to South Africa, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban possibly. We are concerned about crime, our personal safety etc, any tips and or advice on how to have a safe holiday, while still experiencing the country. We have read some reports that in some areas it is not safe to venture outside the hotel, is this true?

You will have a lovely time, just stick to were the tourists stay and don't wander out of the main areas.

There is indeed a lot of car-jacking and stealing from cars in South Africa, but by following common sense you can avoid most of this. First of all as a tourist it is important that you do not end up in neighbourhoods that are dangerous or that you do not know the way. So always make sure you have a good map and drive on the major roads going into cities. Secondly also make sure that you do not leave anything in the car, and when you do make sure it is not visible. Also lock your car doors when you drive in the city, and watch out at traffic lights for people trying to grab things out of the car. So dont leave windows to wide open. Most important for driving out in the country or driving at all, is dont drive at night. This is the most dangerous time of the day.

You must have to adhere to and follow all the tourist instructions for the sake of safe and peaceful travel. You should also get all the facts and figures and important knowledge about the place you are going to visit and get to know about all the geographical and political concerns very well.
Bon Voyage.
